Located in southwestern Connecticut in Fairfield County, Newtown is about sixty miles from New York City. Covering an area of 60.4 square miles, the town is bordered on the south by Easton and Redding, on the north by Bridgewater and Southbury, on the east by Oxford and Monroe, and on the west by Bethel and Brookfield. Newtown is traversed by Interstate 84, U.S. routes 6 and 302, and Connecticut routes 25 and 34.
Newtown has its own police and fire departments as well as a newly expanded public library to serve its citizens. The library features an extensive collection of books including local authors, an extensive genealogy collection, art and sculpture and historical artifacts of Newtown.
The city has a teen center for high school youths, a multipurpose day care center for pre-schoolers and additional facilities for senior citizens to enjoy daily programs, health screening and lunch. Five town parks provide residents with swimming, tennis, ice-skating, softball, picnic area, pavilions and playgrounds. Several large tracts of open space have designated areas for passive and active recreation.
The town’s location along the Housatonic River and Lake Zoar provides areas for boating, hiking and outdoor sports. Newtown Parks and Recreation Department sponsors year-round activities, programs and trips. Several hunting, fishing and bridle clubs have large tracts of land and lakes offering a range of recreational opportunities for members. The city features 2 private country club courses, as well as several other public and private courses nearby. Richter Park Golf Course is an 18-hole, par 72 course rated "one of the top ten public golf courses in the U.S." by Golf Digest.
There are numerous boutiques, antiques, specialty shops, centers and a mall in the city. Sand Hill Plaza Mall is located in Newtown and New England's largest mall, the Danbury Fair Mall, is just 15 minutes away.
